Wedding Songs for Every Ritual
In fact the rituals in Indian weddings are designed to add a moment of entertainment also. Starting from the engagement ceremony of bride and groom till arrival of newlywed couple to their home, there are songs of every occasion and these are sung along with the rituals performed. The priest performs the various puja (worship) related to marriage while the women relatives of the family keep on singing their songs. Even a person not available at the venue can easily make out with the help of songs that which ritual is being performed.
Duration and Types
In olden days and in villages, the Sangeet Ceremony used to help up to ten days, but due to lack of time with the people it kept on shrinking and now the ceremony has been ended at one night function. In a typical Sangeet Ceremony all types of songs such as jokes for the in-laws, would be husband and other relatives, gods etc. are included. It is performed at the both the houses i.e. of the bride as well as the groom. Initially, the function was limited to the women only, but with the passage of time the men also participate with them in singing.
A Grand Affair
You will find that almost all the families perform the sangeet ceremony at grand scale. In some family it is celebrated along with Henna ceremony in order to save the time. In all the states and folks of India it is associated with their folk dance also. For example in Gujarat the sangeet is performed along with garba and dandia dance, but in Punjab the bhangra and gidha is done with Sangeet.
For the purpose of Sangeet Ceremony a big hall (or sometimes an open space) is beautifully decorated with lights, flowers and other traditional things. The people coming in this function are generally dressed in their traditional attires.
The women relatives equipped with dholak, spoon and other musical instruments start the singing. First of all, they offer the prayers to Lord Ganesha. It is followed by the songs devoted to various gods and even the marriage songs related to the gods like Shiv, Rama etc. Gradually the ceremony reaches to its climax where the jokes and songs related to would be bride, would be husband and other in-laws are sung. The girls perform the traditional dance. The exotic function also witness lots if snacks and drink distribution to the audience followed by delicious dinner.
