The traditional Haryanvi Marriages are marked with vibrancy and colourful wedding dresses. The mix of simplicity and enthusiasm are reflected in their attire and accessories. The men prefer Turbans, shirts, dhoti and Juttis while women folks select a range of Lehenga and cholis, ghagra and cholis or salwar- kameez. Usually, men drape a chaddar or blanket on shoulders, while turban is worn by people from the casts like Brahmins, Jats and Rajputs etc.
The traditional Haryanvi bridal wear has seen several different evolutions and improvements over last many years. In Haryana, Thel or the long shirt is part of day to day wear of women. It is worn with ankle length skirt known as ghagri and the odhni to cover the head. These are adorned with embroidered designs and bright colours at the time of wedding. Also, lehenga and angia with red and yellow odhni are worn by certain communities. Some different community women prefer the white odhni having border colour of silver. The women of some other communities in Haryana prefer Saree as traditional Indian bridal wear. These are preferred in bright colours and intricate embroidery. While, combination of skirt and blouse known as lehnga cholis is also a popular choice for the Haryanvi brides.
The bridegroom’s prefer a Sherwani, dhoti or Kurta Pyjama which come in different colours, style and designs. The Sherwnis come in embroidered designs. The pagri or turban is a favourite choice as headgear with a kalgi or brooch. Haryanvi bridegroom prefers jutti as traditional footwear specially, the tilli jutti which is the famous art form of Haryana and included in the wedding attire of the groom. Various designers have combined the feel of today’s world to the traditional wedding dress designs for the Haryanvi bridegrooms.
- Haryanvi Wedding Guest Dresses
The wedding dresses preferred by the family members and guest reflect vibrant designs and bright colours. The men invariably wear turbans while women are draped in duppattas or odhnis on their wedding dresses. The dresses for bride mother are according to the community and may include ghagra, choli, odhni, duppatta, saree or salwar-kameez. The salwar kameez is offered in several styles. It is usually cheaper than several other wedding attires. The salwar kameez has such versatility that it is suitable on various other occasions also.
The ornaments of various types made from silver and gold are preferred by the Haryanvi people. The women’s jewelry includes Kathla or necklaces and an ornamental accessory which is put on forehead called borla. Apart from these, nath or nose ring, earrings, hansil or bangles, various gold chains are also preferred. While women from few communities in Haryana prefer wearing chhailkara, pati and kari on their legs. This completes the traditional accessories list for the Haryanvi women. Further, the red dot or Bindi is an integral part of accessories of the Haryanvi women, which is worn on the foreheads. Presently, Bindis are available in colored stones also and compliment any type of traditional wedding dresses be it lehnga cholis, salwar kameez, ghagra choli or sarees.
