The Dutch society is known for individualistic and modern approach towards life. The people don’t like to spend a lot of money. Having long history and rich culture, Dutch wedding etiquette are simple and no-show off is seen there. The wedding in Dutch is also a simple affair and not an extravagant. They have their own customs and traditions related to marriage.
Following are some of the unique traditions of a typical Dutch marriage.
It is an interesting and unique custom of Dutch marriage in which the wishes to the brides and grooms are presented wedding trees. It is replacement of guest book. For this purpose, a beautiful tree branch is kept adjacent to the table of bride and groom. The paper leaves are attached to this tree branch with the help of colourful ribbons. These paper leaves are placed at the reach of all the guests. The guests are expected to write their wishes for the newly-wed couple on the paper leaves. The couple read the wishes and hang the leaves on wish tree.
Mate Selection and Dowry
There is a unique system of dowry in Dutch wedding. The mate selection is done by the young people themselves. It the groom chosen by the bride is approved by her family, her father gives a trousseau (dowry) which consists of household items. She also receives gifts from groom’s father and it is known as ‘chatelaine’. It is nothing but a chain of silver or rope of leather and contains various household items such as a pincushion, a small knife, a pair of scissors, a mirror etc.
In case the father of the bride does not get agree to the alliance, then also there is Dutch wedding etiquette that the wedding takes place. In this case, no dowry will be given by the bride’s father. The friends of bride come forward and they present the various household items which is normally given in the dowry.
Sitting on Thorn during Wedding
Just before the ceremony, the bridesmaids fill the basket of bride with flowers and green garlands. They also beautify the groom's pipe with ribbons and garlands. The house of the bride is painted in green colour. Both the family host a party. The bride and groom made to sit on thorn under the pine tree. The guests come there and bless the couple.
Walking on Flower Bed
In Dutch tradition, the brides and grooms are made to walk on flower’s bed. They also receive rains of flowers.
In wedding dinner, the sweet meats and spiced wine are the essentially served. The guests are expected to not to waste a grain of dinner and finish all the things served to them. The wastage of food is taken as vice.
Planting of Lily
When the newlywed couple arrives at the groom’s house, both of them plant lilies in front of their house. It is assumed that the happiness and well-being comes to their house and their love is renewed with each season.
