French Traditional Marriages

The rich culture and heritage of France has given much to the world. The various rituals of marriage are not the exception. The French wedding traditions still maintain their uniqueness and specialty. Following are the some of the wedding traditions observed in a traditional French wedding.  
 
Wedding Amoire
 
It is the hope chest which is hand-carved having many symbols related to wealth and prosperity. It is utilised for the bride’s trousseau. Initially it was made by the bride’s father.  
 
White Colour
 
This is the unique tradition. Everything related to the marriage is of while colour, be it dresses of bride, groom, flowers or all other items used for decorations. When the bride and groom proceed to the church along with the procession for the marriage, the children block the path with white ribbons and the bride proceeds after cutting those white ribbons. Even the bed of the couple has white coloured Wedding Quilt. It is assumed that white colour symbolises love, fidelity, femininity, fertility and prosperity.
 
The Bride Bath 
 
On the day of marriage, the bride is given a ritual bath the purpose of which is to purify the bride and remove all the evil influences and ideas (thoughts) from the previous boyfriends. 
 
Flowers a Necessity
 
You will find the flowers everywhere in the French wedding. Almost all the guests bring flowers as gift symbolizing the fresh beginning of life for the couple. The bride also wears flowers in her hair. She may also wear a flower hat. 
 
Walking of Groom with Mother
 
In a traditional French wedding, the groom walks with his mother before arriving the marriage altar. This tradition has been copied in many other cultures too. 
 
Priest Blessing
 
The priest offers his blessings to the newlywed couple under the veil only. This is done to protect them from any malice and evil spirits. 
 
Wedding Cake 
 
In French traditional wedding the cake is made of multi-layered. In modern times, you may find the common cake which is known as the ‘croquembouche’. This common cake is a pyramid of creamed pastries covered in caramel glazes. It is assumed that if the couple kisses the cakes without knocking, then will have lifetime prosperity.
 
La Coupe de Marriage 
 
This is a fun filled tradition. In this, the newlywed couple toast from an engraved two-handled cup. This cup passes to the generations. 
 
Importance of Liquor 
 
The liquor is the important item of wedding dinner. The champagne bottle is held by the young woman and it is beheaded by a man. The wedding dinner consists of delicious French dishes. There is a custom to gift three lobes of breads to the bride. 
 
Chasing by Friends of Couple
 
On the night of wedding day, many friends of the couple gather and their main intention is to disturb or interrupt the couple as pranks. This is known as chiverie and is done by clanging pans and pots. They demand drinks and treats from the couple and after receiving them only they leave the couple alone.
