Mayian - the Punjabi Pre Wedding Rituals Comprising of Batna Ceremony and Chooda Ceremony

Choora ceremony :-

This ritual of putting the set of ivory and red bangles to the would be bride is performed by the maternal uncle, as the onus lies on the maternal uncle families for this particular ritual , where the spice in the performance is further enhanced by the singing of the women of the traditional songs. Coupled with the gifts of cash, jewellery, and some cash called Nanki shak .  He puts the bangles in the niece hands. All the dresses are provided by the maternal uncle particularly for this ritual which are worn by the bride after the bath during the same day. Similarly, the bridegroom-to-be also receives a set of clothes called sherwani from his maternal uncles which he, too, wears at the wedding ceremony. It signifies the importance of the role of the mother's natal family at the wedding rituals, and reinforces the alliance established at her (the mother's) own wedding.

Batna ceremony :-

A paste of turmeric is applied on bride to be, it used to be done in older days to bring natural glow to the skin as the spa culture was not common but has continued cause it is pure fun and also considered auspicious. In the Batna rite, the couple's families rub yellow turmeric paste upon their legs, face, and arms while sitting on a patri (a special red board with embroidery) below a red cloth held by four women. This is done to cleanse and balance the body for married life.

Batna ceremony is performed separately at bride and groom house. In fact, it’s a time where all the relatives feel their immense love and they pour it over the bride or groom. It has become a fashion trend to apply yellow turmeric paste over the husband or groom body.  The couples , particularly the brides are more passionate about the colour of the ceremony which gives them a fabulous and sunny appearance, looking golden and illuminated.

The enthusiasm of boys- the prospective groom also seems at the peak level , where the applying of  yellow paste is realized and celebrated like a festival of holi, the bhabhis and other relatives they tease the groom while applying. An exclusive photoshop goes well along with the entire celebration.
