Read out different kinds of wedding ceremonies in India

Wedding marks the most important event of life; for the individual begins his or her new life with a different set of responsibilities and charms & genres of course! To celebrate this important event of life, the human societies have identified all forms of fervor and traditions that go into to make the actual ceremony. A sense of solemnization rules and the customs get integral to make the occasion fulsome and lively. In countries like India, this fervor gets enhanced because of the strong cultural imprints that are rich amalgams in them! Also, different faiths here have worked to imbibe the resonant elements! Let’s look out into different kinds of wedding ceremonies in India, together with the defining elements of these.

The dedicated rituals from the Vedas

The union is the central element in the marriages here in India too; however, the regional diversity makes its significance felt in every orientations. In the majority Hindu community, the ‘shubh vivah’ is performed with all the Hindu rituals and customs that have flowed since ancient ages. The Vedic mantras of relevance rule the time while the guests and well-wishers become the part of the auspicious occasion. The iconic components that invite the jubilances are the ‘Varmala’ ceremony and the ‘saat phere’ (the 7 solemn revolutions with fire as the witness!). The ‘maang bharai’ and ‘mangal sutra’ are equally important rasms that are held in the culminations.

The nikaah

The Muslims constitute a significant part of the Indian population and have continued with their simple yet distinct ‘nikaah’ ceremony! The ‘nikaah’ is central to the Islamic wedding ceremony and ties the knot between the bride and the groom. The ‘kazi’ presides and after taking the permission from the parents, proceeds to obtain the will of the bride for the marriage proposal sent to her by the groom. This is done publicly and there has to be witnesses for the affirmations so received. This completes the wedding process and the congratulations are showered upon the bride and groom. This customary process is the core of Muslim wedding in India and throughout the world; although the Indian Muslims have imbibed many of the regional cultural elements and offer the similar bright celebratory spectrum.

The Christians traditions and the ‘anand karaj’

The Christians are another significant community here and they too rely on a simple wedding custom that is generally carried out in the church. There is marked similarity with the Muslim custom as here too the church’ father formally places the marriage proposal of the groom before the bride; who gives her affirmation!

Sikhs wedding or the ‘anand karaj’ rasm is performed in the Gurudwara by any amritdhari sikh and the bride and groom tie the knot for life. Here too, the ceremony is simple but the fervour again is big; that marks the characteristic icon of the Indian weddings. For that reason, we boast the tags such as ‘great Indian fat wedding’! It is great because of the diversity of customs that have been kept high since ages and fat because the elements of rich cuisine and pomp and music rule high.
