After the bride and groom both declare their intention to enter in a union, the hands of the couple are joined and fastened together with cords or just before, just after, or during their vows are made to each other. The packaging of the cord is a symbol of infinity. The hand-fasting node that is related is a symbolic representation of the unity between the couple. In a demonstration unit, they bind to each other.
Traditionally, a hand-fasting was performed by a priest or priestess who invokes the energies of the four elements to create a sacred circle in which the couple could be reached as incarnations of God and the Goddess. The fabric that bound hands was usually the tartan plaid, representing clan or family of the married group. One of the beautiful symbols on hand fast is that it is also a statement of intent, where the bride and groom make themselves clear they marry of their own accord, indicating their vows. In this ceremony including six strings are draped on his hands, one for each vow couples.
